Another day of Champions League action has passed and yet another exciting day of matches surpassed. Pep beats his former team, Bayern continue to dominate and Atleti’s perfect record ends but were still able to beat Rostov in Madrid.
Barca’s Struggles Continue. How much things can change in two weeks. Two weeks ago, Barcelona completely dismantled Manchester City 4-0 in the Nou Camp. An unconvincing win at Valencia, a loss to Espanyol (at home), and a 1-0 win at home against the worst team in Spain later, and City dismantle Barcelona at the Etihad 3-1. Pep called Barcelona the best team in the world, but the last three games for the Catalans have said anything but that. Now they must travel to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan for a date with Sevilla. Lucho must get his second team players in form. Andre Gomes, Paco Alcacer, and Samuel Umtiti have been less than inspiring. Barcelona may have the most dangerous attacking trio in the world, but everything behind them is completely in question.
Bayern are the best in the world. FC Bayern Munchen now sit on the throne as the best soccer club on the planet. Get used to it. In a season where all the coaching spotlights are shone over England and Spain, a genius now resides in Germany. Do not sleep on Carlo Ancelotti. The Milan legend and Real’s Decima winning coach has Super Bayern on a rhythm that we’ve seen much too often in Germany. Just take a look at their recent form. Two goals from Lewandowski got them over PSV, two consecutive 3-1 wins over Augsburg both at home and away, a win over Borussia Monchengladbach at home, and a win over PSV 4-1 in the previous fixture tells you everything. Bayern has been making a case for best team in the world for months after both Bayern and Barca were eliminated from the Champions League last year. Now with Barca’s shaky form and Bayern’s down to business football that Ancelotti is implementing, it is time to recognize FC Bayern as the best club in the world as of right now.
Atleti’s Defense, Penetrable but is it beatable? Weird to say considering that after Atleti lost to Sevilla, they’ve allowed three goals in the past two games. They haven’t faced the toughest competition either, playing Rostov and Malaga their last two games. Atleti is scoring though, Griezmann has the nose for goal again this year and that doesn’t seem to be going away. Cholo’s team will either freeze you into a 1-0 game that feels like you’re losing 3-0. Like seriously, when this Atleti defense is turned on defensively, it feels like you can’t even get the ball past midfield. When they were beating teams 1-0, it was only 1-0 because Atleti weren’t being clinical finishing. Now Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro and Yannick Carrasco lead a potent attacking trident that looks to stay. Atletico are a very good team and when all of their players are in form, they can look like one of the best teams on the planet. The challenge sits in their own country and in their own city. To be the best in the world, you must be the King of Madrid, and the King of Spain. I am telling you that this year, Atleti have it.
