The weekend has wrapped up, and we have results from some of the biggest matches of the day from each of the biggest competitions on the planet. League leaders Real Madrid and Juventus fell today and the English northwest derby ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw. Pep’s City was horrific and could three Premier League superstars be on their way out?
Sevilla FC 2 Real Madrid 1
Well, third time’s the charm amirite? Two cup matches and one league match in two weeks between the two title challenging sides, Madrid eliminated Sevilla from the Copa Del Rey but Sevilla snapped Real’s spectacular 40 game unbeaten streak with a late winner from Stevan Jovetic who has been proving his worth the past week. Sevilla close the gap on previously invincible Madrid and Barca and Atleti are not far behind…
Fiorentina 2 Juventus 1
There was a shake up in Serie A as well as league leaders Juventus fell to La Viola today and with Roma’s victory, Juventus only sit a point above the rest of Italy. Juve’s lead is not safe whatsoever and Roma and Napoli are biting at the heels. Juventus is in very real danger of finally relinquishing the Scudetto to another team.
Manchester United 1 Liverpool 1
England showcased one of their finest fixtures of the season tonight as United and Liverpool played to a hard 1-1 draw where Pogba relinquished a penalty and King Zlatan broke Reds’ hearts as United snuck a point away from Klopp and his heavy metal side. United were the ones on the front foot for most of the fixture as Liverpool were forced to drop back and defend for a majority of the games. A brilliant saved by Mignolet on Zlatan and Mhki’s missed chance (and yet another wonderful save by Mignolet), were just two of the chances missed by the Red Devils. Klopp’s Reds through numbers at United as well as both played to a well deserved draw where the win could’ve been given to either side.
Everton 4 Manchester City 0
Meanwhile in Liverpool, Everton spanked City’s helpless defense. Lukaku punished Pep and Mirallas contributed as well as City were completely humbled at Goodison Park. Pep’s “philosophies” haven’t quite translated into the Premier League as smoothly as it did in La Liga and the Bundesliga. Back to the drawing board once again for the Citizens.
Algeria Draws, Senegal Wins
In a quick Africa Cup of Nations note, Algeria could only muster a draw against Zimbabwe as Riyad Mahrez netted 2 and Sadio Mane starred as Senegal are hitting the ground running after 3 points in their first group game.
Unrest for Payet, Alexis and Costa
And on a quick transfer note, three Premier League superstars may be looking to leave their clubs as Payet has refused to play for West Ham. Alexis threw a tantrum after being subbed off against Swansea and still hasn’t signed a new deal. Diego Costa has had his head turned by China. Although Costa has had already said he’s staying at Chelsea, he’s looking towards a move in the summer away from West London. I think a move back to Atletico Madrid makes the most sense.
